Mythical Trickster Figures, is the first substantial collection of essays about the trickster to appear since Radin's 1955 The Trickster. Contributions by leading scholars treat a wide range of manifestations of this mischievous character, ranging from the Coyote of the American Southwest to such African figures as Eshu-Elegba and Ananse, the Japanese Susa-no-o, the Greek Hermes, Christian adaptations of Saint Peter, and examples found in contemporary American fiction and drama.

This book presents the vampire as a truly international phenomenon, not restricted to the original folk character, the literary vampire (such as Dracula), or 20th and 21st-century film versions. Instead, we find examples of vampires from literally around the world: each culture and age reshaping the legend in its own image and even seeking psychological and scientific explanations to explain the phenomenon.

Where do fantastic beasts come from? How do they appear in different cultures? What is their history, how did they survive until now? And above all, what are fantastic beasts? This book will explore these questions through the lens of archaeology, art history, philology and philosophy. Not satisfied with what nature offered, human beings wanted to go beyond reality and invented mysterious and intriguing creatures populating their world. During Antiquity, every culture had its own strange creatures, that mixed the forms of one or more animal, plant and human species in an infinite number of more-or-less fanciful combinations. Griffins, sphinxes, mermaids, centaurs, satyrs, pygmies, werewolves, winged monsters and unspeakable hybrids, fantastic beasts abound in the imagination of many populations throughout Antiquity. Most of them continue to live, sometimes transformed, through fairy tales, literature, movies and videogames. Faced with the abundance and variety of the ancient fantastic bestiary, the questions that come to mind are: Where do fantastic beasts come from? How do they appear in different cultures? What is their history, how did they survive until now? And above all, what are fantastic beasts? This book will explore these questions through the lens of archaeology, art history, philology and philosophy. The result is a hybrid book, precisely like the fantastic animals that constitute its object, a book which offers different approaches of analysis while being aware that our means are often vain to capture these elusive figures, which ultimately are more like us than they seem. Man, like Oedipus, will often prove to be more monstrous than the Sphinx...

This book ('I was wandering in circles the whole night long. The symbolism of circular movement in European traditional culture') researches the common symbolism of the circular movement in European tradition and culture through the ethnographical, historical and linguistic sources from different regions of Europe and from different historical periods. The circular movement is identifyed as the movement which is in traditional world view and understanding of the space caracteristic for the movements between this world and the other. At the same time it enables the communication between the worlds and transmition from one to the other. This book ('I was wandering in circles the whole night long. The book ['In the moonlight glow. Outlines of mythic characters in the villages of Lokev and Prelože in the context of Slavic mythology'] is a rarity on the European scale in the field of pre-Christian beliefs. What makes it so valuable is that it is a first-hand record of these beliefs, as they were told to the author by people close to him, grandmothers, grandfathers and villagers, who preserved their old-faith beliefs and rituals until the last century. The book is therefore an inexhaustible source of old- faith practices, beliefs, sacred places and other folklore traditions in the villages Lokev, Prelože and their immediate neighborhood. As such, it is one of the main sources of study in Slavic mythology, as well as in general and monument to the integration of karst-nature and its people. Knjiga je zato neizčrpen vir staroverskih praks, verovanj, svetih mest in drugega folklornega izročila v vaseh Lokev, Prelože in njihovi bližnji soseščini. Kot taka je eden temeljnih virov študija mitologije pri Slovanih in tudi splošno ter spomenik povezanosti kraške narave in njenih ljudi.
